Environmental allergies are caused by certain allergens in the air or on surfaces that pets interface with. Flea allergy dermatitis is, as the name suggests, caused by an allergic reaction to flea saliva left on the skin following a bite. This spring, by interfering with these possible triggers, you can promote your pet’s safety, comfort, and overall health.

Beyond the Sneeze

Pet allergies in spring can result in sneezing and watery eyes. However, most symptoms of pet allergies concern the skin. Minor skin itching and irritation can worsen over time and lead to skin infection and pain.

Because dermatological issues can be related to other health problems, including autoimmune conditions, cancer, and hormonal disorders, it is necessary to rule these out prior to zeroing in on allergies. Treatment and veterinary support is vital to a pet’s long term wellness.

Signs to Look For

If your pet starts to excessively self-groom a certain area or obsessively licks or chews, they may have allergies. Other signs include head shaking, smelly ears, lumps or bumps on the skin, flaking skin, and bald spots. This happens because, as the immune system tries to fight the effects of the allergens, an allergic reaction occurs.

Using various diagnostic tools the cause(s) of allergies can be identified. In addition to environmental allergies and flea allergy dermatitis, food allergies can create serious problems for pets. Once we know the cause, medications, supplements, skin creams, and lifestyle changes can reduce symptoms and promote relief.

Spring Cleaning for Pets

In addition to obvious environmental allergens, including mold, grass and dust, the following commonly affect pets in California:

Oak tree pollen

Mulberry shrubs

Sweet vernal grass

Black walnut pollen

When cleaning, be mindful of how much pollen, dust and mold spores can be released and spread into the air. Try to run air purifiers to mitigate some of the allergens in the home environment, mop the floors regularly, and clean upholstery to reduce build up.

Keep your pet in a well-ventilated space when cleaning the home, and do not allow them any contact with surfaces until cleaning products are dry. Maintain a regular grooming schedule to support the skin and coat.

Pet Allergies in Spring

If a flea allergy is identified, parasite prevention medication will kill fleas and limit the pet’s exposure to flea saliva. Certain anti-itch topical creams or medications can manage future flare ups when the seasons are about to turn.

As most pet allergies concern the skin, we may recommend dietary supplements like omega-3 fatty acids to aid the skin and coat.

We’re Here to Help

Seasonal allergies may not simply disappear when the seasons change. As allergies can only be managed, not cured, pets may continue to feel the effects of allergies well beyond the initial triggers.

Please call us at (916) 984-0990 with any questions or concerns. Our staff is always here to help you at Blue Ravine Animal Hospital

There are three main causes of allergies in pets, and with spring on the horizon, two of these triggers pick up a tremendous amount of force.
